HPV Vaccine in Taiwan: A Guide for Foreigners Living in Taipei

HPV, or human papillomavirus, is one of the most common viral infections worldwide. Many people may become infected with HPV at some point in their lives, often without any obvious symptoms. According to the U.S. CDC, HPV infections are very common, and most infections go away on their own; however, persistent infection with certain high-risk HPV types may lead to cancers later in life.

For foreigners living, working, or studying in Taiwan, understanding HPV prevention is an important part of long-term health care. Whether you are an expat, international student, foreign professional, or long-term resident in Taipei, getting the HPV vaccine in Taiwan can be a proactive way to help protect yourself against HPV-related diseases.

What Is the HPV Vaccine ?

The HPV vaccine is designed to help prevent diseases caused by certain types of human papillomavirus. HPV infection is associated with cervical cancer, vaginal cancer, vulvar cancer, anal cancer, some head and neck cancers, and genital warts. The CDC also notes that HPV can cause cancers of the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, anus, and the back of the throat.

There are different types of HPV vaccines, including 2-valent, 4-valent, and 9-valent vaccines. The word “valent” refers to the number of HPV types the vaccine helps protect against.

At our clinic in Taipei, we provide Gardasil 9, also known as the 9-valent HPV vaccine. Gardasil 9 helps protect against 9 HPV types: 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58. These include HPV types that are linked to cervical cancer and other HPV-related cancers, as well as types that may cause genital warts.

Why Should You Consider Getting the HPV Vaccine ?

HPV is mainly transmitted through intimate skin-to-skin contact, including vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Because HPV often causes no symptoms, many people do not know they have been infected. Even people with only one sexual partner may still be exposed to HPV.

In most cases, the immune system clears HPV naturally. However, when high-risk HPV types remain in the body for a long time, they may increase the risk of developing certain cancers. The CDC states that HPV causes about 36,000 cancer cases every year in the United States, and HPV vaccination can prevent more than 90% of cancers caused by HPV from developing.

The HPV vaccine works best when given before exposure to HPV, which is why many health authorities recommend vaccination at a younger age. However, adults who have not completed HPV vaccination may still consider getting vaccinated after discussing their personal situation with a doctor. The CDC recommends HPV vaccination for everyone through age 26 if not adequately vaccinated, while adults aged 27 through 45 may consider vaccination based on shared clinical decision-making with a healthcare provider.

For foreigners in Taiwan, especially those planning to stay long-term, the HPV vaccine may be an important preventive health choice. If you are unsure whether you have received the HPV vaccine before, whether you need additional doses, or whether Gardasil 9 is suitable for you, our medical team can help you review your vaccination history and provide professional guidance.
